Land and Ocean Grabbing
by Luca Catalano Gonzaga
In many parts of Africa, entire communities are being stripped of their land and marine resources by foreign governments and multinational corporations, all in the name of development and profit.
This is the phenomenon known as land grabbing and ocean grabbing: territories transferred without the consent of local populations, forests cleared for intensive monocultures, and seas plundered by industrial fishing fleets.
The result is the loss of livelihoods, food security, and basic rights for millions of people.
The photographic project “Land and Ocean Grabbing”, supported by the Nando and Elsa Peretti Foundation and promoted by Witness Image, gives voice to these often-invisible realities, highlighting the vital connection between African communities and their natural environments.
A visual investigation and act of denunciation that urges us to reflect on the deep inequalities of our time and on a development model that continues to impoverish those with less, to sustain the consumption of those who already have too much.
